Today the baseball world lost a tremendous man and a true legend. The Yankees will miss you, George, and so will all Yankees fans. My prayers are with your family and may you rest in peace.
I saw this on the news this morning, and from the reactions of the fans and sportscasters on the video, you can tell that the fall was pretty disturbing. I’m just glad the fan was not more seriously injured.
Remember the name Crystal Gale Mangum? If not, surely you remember the 2006 Duke Lacrosse rape scandal. She’s the one that accused three members of the Duke lacrosse team of locking her in a bathroom, sexually assaulting and raping her.
Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and David Evans were indicted on charges, thrown off the lacrosse team and wrongly convicted in the court of public opinion. Now it appears that she is getting her comeuppance:
Durham police arrested Duke lacrosse accuser Crystal Gale Mangum, 33, late Wednesday after she allegedly assaulted her boyfriend, set his clothes on fire in a bathtub and threatened to stab him.
Authorities charged her with attempted first-degree murder, five counts of arson, assault and battery, communicating threats, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, injury to personal property, identity theft and resisting a public officer.
Lock her up and throw away the key. “Good riddance to bad rubbish.”
Tonight is the night for football. The top two teams in the nation — Florida (Go SEC!) and Oklahoma (meh) play tonight. Tonight is also the night for Tim Tebow and new Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen to shine.
I think both teams are exceptional, and I don’t think there is any way that the BCS actually determines the number one team. I think we need a playoff system for that. But, the system is what it is, and I think whichever team wins tonight will be the number one team in the nation.
I just hope it’s Florida. Go Gators, and Go Southeastern Conference!
A local newspaper, The Sun Herald, has this article this morning regarding the investigation into the death of local high school football star, Billy Joe Johnson. Apparently the family’s lawyer and the NAACP are concerned about some of the wounds on the body of Billy Joe Johnson. The civil rights group is also paying for a second autopsy after the state examiner’s office is complete with their autopsy.
Well, it is official now. Mississippi State University has a new football coach — Dan Mullen. Mr. Mullen was most recently the offensive coördinator at the University of Florida. That’s right, MSU fans! The guy who led the Florida offense to one of their most successful records has been tapped as the new head coach for the Bulldogs! I don’t know about you, but I’m very excited about next year’s prospects.
Mullen, 36, comes to Mississippi State from the University of Florida, where he has spent the past four years as offensive coördinator and quarterbacks coach. During his time in Gainesville, Mullen has directed the Gator offense to consecutive top finishes among Southeastern Conference offenses. Florida ranked first in the SEC in scoring offense and total offense in 2008, averaging 45.2 points and 442.4 yards per game. And under Mullen’s tutelage in 2007, UF led the league with an average of 42.5 points and 457.2 yards per contest. (MstateAthletics)
If Mr. Mullen can turn State’s program around, we could potentially go on to be a major contender in the SEC next year. Just look at what Houston Nutt did with Olé Miss. I believe Dan Mullen can do that with MSU. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Good morning, all. The wife and I were up at the crack of dawn this morning (my normal time of getting up — around 5:30 a.m.) to get ready for her Praxis II test. We left the house around 6:30 this morning and drove over to the University of South Alabama in Mobile. After I dropped her off, I headed over to the Shell station across from campus. The price there was $3.799 per gallon, but lo and behold they were out of 87 octane. Since I was running on vapor, I had to go somewhere close.
The next station down the street was a BP. It was a quarter of a mile down the road, and the price was $3.899 per gallon!! I suppose this is all the supply-demand thing since Hurricane Ike has shut down a good portion of the oil rigs offshore of Texas and Louisiana as well as the refineries in the Houston/Pasadena area. Still, I couldn’t believe the jump in price in that short of a distance. But it’s better than most areas that are starting to see the price spike above $4.00 a gallon — some places even nearing $5.00. Crazy.
