Californians reject Tax Hikes

by Eric on May 20th, 2009

Arnold Schwarzenegger and his legislature received a very loud message from their constituents on Tuesday – No tax hikes!  All five of the measures on the ballot that would close the $21 billion deficit were overwhelmingly rejected.  The only proposal that was approved by the public was the one barring pay increases for state officials.

Of course, the area that will receive the largest spending cuts is education.  One teacher, Ashley Hodge, said, “I’m actually a little nervous.  We need supplies…and the school is getting ready to do a second round of layoffs.”  Why do lawmakers always see education as “optional”?  Why are spending cuts always applied to education first?

Now we’ll get to see just how much of our hard-earned money will go to bail out the rich and famous in California.  Get ready, Middle America – California’s extravagent lifestyle is too big to fail…I also wonder if the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will override the voters on this issue, just like they tried to do – and are still trying to do - on Proposition 8.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
